Capacitors are used in electric circuits to provide a temporary storage of electrical charge. They have two applications in UV power supplies.

1. To ensure simple choke and igniter or transformer power supplies run efficiently. If correctly specified they ‘balance the circuit’ ensuring that unnecessarily high electrical current are not drawn (from the mains). This is a process called ‘Power Factor Correction’.

2. In more complicated transformer circuits capacitors can also be used to give a more accurate power control of the lamps, resulting in a power output protected from any fluctuations in mains voltage. This therefore will ensure a constant and stable power supply to the UV lamps, and therefore allowing a consistent cure. They also allow UV lamp power to be adjusted incrementally to suit the requirements of any particular type of UV process.
